Well if you didn’t know, Marvel is relaunching the Ultimate Comics line with all new holographic-foil covers. Now I know some of you will scream “oh my god the 90s are back.” Well, you can kiss it cause I loved those variant exclusive covers in the 90s and I applaud their return.

And before the mob with the pitchforks and the torches break the door down let me say that these covers look awesome except that Spider-Man cover. Whoever drew that needs to put their crayolas up.

Wednesday Comic is teh Awesome……right?

Today begins the running of the short form Superman strip from DC Comic’s Wednesday Comics in USA Today, both in their print and online versions. I’m big Superman fan obviously but am not sure how I fill about this.

On the one hand the more superman exposure we can get the better, right? It keeps people familiar with the character, and fans hungry for more, increasing the likelihood of another movie and all that.

However, as a comic critic I don’t know if I can be a fan of this short form serialized version of comics. I mean it works fine for Garfield and Dilbert, but the essence of those comics are to tell one note jokes in three panels. You get in, make you joke, you get out. One and done. This, cliffhanger version of comic storytelling, only giving me a few panels at a time, might just drive me crazy with anticipation.

All in all however, I must conclude this to be a good thing. It seems to have been well received by all the major critics, and anything that makes Superman seem cool, especially when he has struggled with that task in the past so much, is fine by me. I hope the readers of DC’s Wednesday comics and USA Today both love it.

The Red Tornado Blows!!!

Okay DC you’re doing it again. In your inane attempt to take a second or third string character, spotlight them, and make them cool again, you're just really showcasing why they suck and stinking up the place in the process. Nobody wanted a Red Tornado Series,… NOBODY! You couldn’t just have Reddy be a unique character, but instead you have decided to make him one in a series of sucky elemental robots with Red in the name. COME ON… MY KIDS COULD WRITE BETTER COMICS THAN THAT!!!

First they introduced us to RED VOLCANO!

Now we get RED TOPEDO!

If I see any of these comics I’m gonna burn em’ I swear, even if they belong to somebody else……….

Jon’s Pull List for 7/8/2009

It’s a small week this week which is to my liking. I’m so far behind on other stuff I may actually get caught up on some of that instead of just getting more behind. This week’s issue of Green Lantern sorta kicks off the entire Blackest Night event. I’m also very excited to see if Wednesday Comics turns out to be something memorable or a whole lotta nothing. Here’s the list.

NEW AVENGERS REUNION #4 (OF 4)
NOBODY HC (MR)
AMAZING SPIDER-MAN ANNUAL #36
GREEN LANTERN #43 (BLACKEST NIGHT)
GREEN ARROW BLACK CANARY #22
WEDNESDAY COMICS #1 (OF 12)

MEGAN FOX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Jennifer's Body - Red Band Trailer

Here's a Megan Fox movie that you might actually want to see. Not sure if this will be any good or not but I think it seems very interesting, and hey, there's Megan Fox, let's not forget that.

My Pirate, My Friend

My Pirate, My Friend

Piracy, the video game industry's multi-billion dollar problem, may have met its match.

The solution to the illegal copying of video games perhaps isn't a law enforcement task force or volley of lawsuits, but the legitimization of the act itself.

Last week news broke that The Pirate Bay, one of the largest websites in the world dedicated to the illegal downloading of video games, was being purchased by a business group in Sweden with plans on turning the site into a purely legal operation.

Global Gaming Factory X doesn't plan on stopping the downloading of video games, but rather hopes to make enough money to pay the publishers for those downloads.

"We would like to introduce models which entail that content providers and copyright owners get paid for content that is downloaded via the site, " Hans Pandeya, CEO Global Gaming Factory, said in a prepared statement. "The Pirate Bay is a site that is among the top 100 most visited Internet sites in the world. However, in order to live on, The Pirate Bay requires a new business model, which satisfies the requirements and needs of all parties, content providers, broadband operators, end users, and the judiciary."

The news comes just months after a nine-day trial against Stockholm-based Pirate Bay found four guilty of making copyright content available. The four were sentenced to a year in prison each and were fined more than $3 million.

While heralded by the Entertainment Software Association, the ruling and even the possible closure of The Pirate Bay would likely have little lasting impact on piracy. That's because it doesn't address the people pirating games, just those making it easier to do so.

Billy Pidgeon, an analyst with Game Changer Research, feels that piracy can only really be dealt with by some meeting of the minds.

"I hate to hear the industry talking about how they have to crush piracy, throwing down the gauntlet," Pidgeon said. "The last thing the industry wants to do is alienate their customer base."

But on the other hand, Pidgeon adds, people saying that they deserve to take a game for free is just as absurd.

That's why Pidgeon was so delighted to hear Electronic Arts' reaction to news of their game, The Sims 3, being pirated.

Three weeks before the game was released for sale, it showed up on pirate sites.

John Riccitiello, the head of EA, told Kotaku that they were initially very nervous about the leaked title.

But because the game relies so heavily on online play, something EA can control, gamers who grabbed an early, free version of the title didn't get the full experience, only a taste.

In the end, Riccitiello said, EA decided to think of it as the publisher putting out a really good demo of the game, instead worrying over lost sales.

"Thats great, I love to hear them talk like that," Pidgeon said of EA's take on the issue. "Super distribution (like piracy networks) can be turned into an advantage. It's not necessarily lost sales."

In other words, when you can't beat them, use them.

Captain America, @#$% Yeah

It's the Forth of July, how could I not post this. Thanks to the guys over at Topless Robot.

Comics the Founding Fathers would have loved

This post looks best on a desktop resolution of 800x600. Larger widescreen resolutions will mess the spacing up. So there,....

Happy fourth of July Alternate Reality fans. It’s our Independence day here in the US and as a result of this festive occasion, I thoughts that perhaps a look back at our founding fathers was in order, and perhaps on the chance to tie history and comics together, that I might suppose what comics the founders would read if they could. What follows is a flight of fancy where I imagine a world where George Washington and the like had access to the comics of our day what they might have preferred from the may wares that now array the comic shelf at you local retailer.

George Washington: George Washington was a military leader and embodies the America Idea. His favorite comic could be none other than Captain America. Though I’m not sure how our first President would feel about the current direction of the story what with Captain America being dead and all, but I suppose that George would be elated to find out that Steve Rogers (also the embodiment of the American idea) is coming back this summer in the pages of Captain America Reborn.

Thomas Jefferson: Thomas Jefferson is most famous I believe for his penning of the Declaration of Independence in which he wrote that “all men are created equal.” He also served at President at which time someone bestowed upon him a gift of a huge cheese wheel. After that time Thomas Jefferson became known as “the big cheese”. It seems to me that Mr. Jefferson might have enjoyed the adventures of DC’s Captain Marvel also known as “The Big Red Cheese”. However Thomas would be most disappointed to learn that there is currently no Captain Marvel comic coming out from DC comics, though they have promised an appearance from him in the pages of Justice League: Cry for Justice.

John Adams: Aside from being president John Adams was known for marring above his station and being wedded to a wealthy woman. I believe that Mr. Adams would have been most interested in the upcoming wedding proposal from Archie to either Betty or Veronica. Chief among his concerns would be weather Archie had the good sense to marry up in life as he did.

James Madison: James Madison was our smallest president weighing only 100 lbs and standing only 5’4”. How could Mr. Madison not be a fan of the Atom, and he would be most pleased to know that DC currently has two Atoms running around their comic universe. Mr. Madison could choose between the original Atom – Ray Palmer, or his up and coming replacement Ryan Choi. Both have been featured in the new Justice League series Cry for Justice.

Alexander Hamilton: Mr. Hamilton was a scrapper. He had along military history and was a notorious dueler. He loved to duel. In fact any time that he wasn’t dueling, was labeled by him as “time spent not dueling”. It was this preoccupation of his that ultimately lead to his death at the hands of Raymond Aaron Burr. Being a man who was given to fights and scrapping in general he would most assuredly have enjoyed the tales of Wolverine. Although a Canadian, Logan is a scrapper in his own right. In fact like Hamilton he’s the best there is at what he does. Well,… in Hamilton’s case perhaps he wasn’t the best after all.

John Hancock: John Hancock was the signer of the Declaration of the Independence that signed his name so large so that King George would be able to see it without his spectacles. However, when choosing a favorite comic Mr. Hancock would have turned to his childhood for inspiration. As a child John Hancock’s parents died and he was adopted and raised by his uncle. It would be the love of his uncle that would cause Mr. Hancock to be huge fan of Spider-Man who was also raised by his uncle. How pleased would Mr. Hancock be with Amazing Spider-Man now comic out three times a month, and some of the best Spider-Man stories written in forever too.

Benjamin Franklin: Benjamin Franklin was a renaissance man out of time. He was an inventor, scholar, a newspaper man, an ambassador, and a founding father. His genius would have caused him to be fans of other brilliant men in comics the likes of Reed Richards, and Tony Stark. However, Mr. Franklin was also a notorious ladies man, a hound if you will. On those dark nights when he was feeling a little randy he probably would have turned to the pages of Grimm’s Fairly Tales to “cope”.

Who Else Hates Batman's New Belt? Just Me? OK....

In case your not reading the new Batman books staring Dick Grayson as the new Caped Crusader, then you may not realize what his redesigned costume looks like. So here it is.

Re-designed is hardly the word for it. A different belt and different gloves, or gauntlets if you will, and that's about it. At best I'd call that a tweak and not a re-design.

Anybody else hate that belt? No?..... It's just me?....... Really?

Slow News Week, so Here’s Jon’s Comics for the Week

So there’s not a whole lot to talk about this week news-wise so I thought, “Hey, everybody wants to know what comics I’m reading right?” So here’s my pull list for the week. The only sucky part about doing business with DCBS is that I don’t get my comics on Wednesday like everybody else. My shipment doesn’t hit till Friday. So while everyone else if enjoying Batman & Robin, and discovering how Captain America is coming back from the dead in Reborn, I just have to wait and hope I get a chance to read this weekend.

Viking #1
X-Force #14
Green Lantern Corps #38 (Blackest Night)
Batman and Robin #2
Justice League Cry for Justice #1 (Of 6)
Fantastic Four #568
Greek Street #1
Reborn #1 (Of 5)
Marvel Divas #1

Alternate Reality now covering video games!!! FINALLY!

Hey fan boys...and girls...fan people? Anyway, have you been like me and heard the Alternate Reality podcast beginning where the ominous voice of Jon Loveless states that they cover comics/movies/VIDEO GAMES?? I have heard nothing of video games JON. So, in an epiphany, my bud Jon gave me access to write blog posts about upcoming news about the virtual world that we live in. Maybe he'll even give me a spot on the show...hmmm....

First Topic: Motion verses Vegetation
All the rage nowadays is the motion controllers and game specific controllers that help us to "experience" the game more in depth. Nintendo has the Wii remotes (lovingly called the wiimote around my house), as well as the Wii Fit balance board and a plethora of add-ons for them. Microsoft is coming out with the new "Project Natal" that involves an "Eye Toy" lookalike that sensors your every move and responds by moving the avatar on the screen in the same manner. News is that PlayStation is actually looking into a motion project of it's own. Now this notwithstanding, we also have the series of guitars, microphones, and drum sets of Guitar Hero and Rock Band.

Here's my question:
Is all this "moving" stuff really necessary?
I personally like the motion for the most part, but it tends to take away from the gameplay somewhat. The game producers are making games that fit the controller, not focusing so much on the content. Is it just me or is Nintendo the only company making decent games for the Wii? Has the industry gone overboard in trying to get our lazy fat geek butts off the sofa? I appreciate the sentiment video game gods, I really do. But make some more in depth games. Party games aren't bad...when you're having a party, but when I'm alone and want to play, I tend to get a good old sit down normal controller game.

Am I just lazy? What do you think?

Focus on Indie-ish Authors: J. Michael Stracynski

I was thinking of doing a post on this creator for a while now, but upon reading the news that Straczynski is leaving Thor, it seemed timely to go over some of his work. I’ll start off by saying I’m a pretty big fan of his comic work (hate to say it, but I think I’ve only ever seen one full episode of his grand work: Babylon 5). I have generally enjoyed everything he has put out (not that I agreed with everything done with Spider-Man during his tenure on that book) but what stands out for me is his work outside of mainstream super heroes. This is what I’ll be focusing on.

Just before the launch of the book that would bring this writer to my attention, I remember there being such a buzz about him. Wizard ran articles on him praising his skills and talent and how such a ‘mainstream’ presence would benefit the comic book medium in general. As I was not a B5 fan, I didn’t really pay much attention to any of this and the title of his hot new book, Rising Stars, barely registered. That is until I actually read an issue of it; after that fateful evening in Walden Books where I was flipping over some comics and discovered this amazingly lush, dark and haunting story, I would remember the name J. Michael Straczynki. I read issue # 3 and had to go hunting for the rest of the issues.
From the get go, you get the feeling that the story one is reading is important. It’s important because it’s a story that’s very personal, despite it being played on a grand scale. Through all the intrigue, the murder, the betrayal, the fighting, the author is able to let the reader into these character’s heads, to get a feel for their personalities, desires and hopes; most of all, you know that these characters know each other from when they were children, so that makes every fight, confrontation or any death something memorable.

The premise, while simple, has a great hook: a comet goes over a town affecting every woman pregnant at the time, giving us over 100 children with special powers and abilities. The story takes off from there. What makes this concept great is that the reader is shown how a world reacts to these Specials and how they interact with society.

The story is split up into three basic arcs: the first one has a focus on the main characters and their place within a, more or less, “normal” world where there happen to be people with super powers. The second act shows the super powered in conflict without regards to what surrounds them. The third act is basically the survivors looking to make the world a better place. I consider the first arc in particular to be the strongest; the second one was very good as well, although the plot’s not as intricate as the first arc.
Unfortunately for me, the publishing delays for the story did affect my enjoyment of the series itself, as it actually took 6 years (from ’99 to ’05) for the story to be published in its entirety. Despite that, this is a story that had a profound impact on me. This was the first series out of the big 2 that I had read and followed and made me realized that there were other options out there.
The book is very smart, the mood it establishes is ominous (the art goes a long way towards that), the story is grand, the characters are rich and deep. While superhero concepts play a huge role in the development of the story, this isn’t a superhero story, in essence. It’s about power, how to deal with it and why it comes.

The next book I want to write about is Midnight Nation, also put out by Top Cow Comics. I picked up the whole series at a con based purely on JMS’ name as I had no idea what to expect from the book. I was a bit surprised. By that point, I was expecting a thoughtful and intricate storytelling, but was not quite expecting such a ‘religious’/philosophical, thought-provoking theme.

To be honest, now that I’m thinking about this, it’s getting me into a re-reading mood and I think I’m going to be tackling this story in an in-depth review. So, I’m not going to be writing too much more about this. Suffice it to say, it’s good. Plus, there’s great art by Gary Frank (my first exposure to this artist, actually) that fits the story’s tone and mood so well.

These two stories I mentioned came out of Top Cow, under Stracynki’s own imprint “Joe’s Comics”. There were issues and disagreements at Top Cow, so the line was discontinued (shame, really). JMS later went to publish a couple of books with Marvel, through the creator-owned line: Icon. Two books came out of this:

Dream Police Book of Lost Souls

The first of these is Dream Police, a one-shot that features two detectives looking to ensure order in the dream world. This book is an odd combination of noir and fantasy. I’m a sucker for things metaphysical and creepy, so this was right my alley. Add to this Mike Deodato art, and I’m sold.

Book of Lost Souls was a series that lasted 6 issues with art by Colleen Doran. The book’s synopsis, as taken from Wikipedia, reads: “The comic follows Jonathan, a man who lived over a century ago who was transported to the 21st century during an attempted suicide. His new life involves supernatural mysteries and enigmatic characters such as a talking cat named Mystery and the Dark Man, whose plans for Jonathan are unclear. Jonathan is given the power to "save" the Lost, those individuals who have lost all hope in their lives.” I would like to give some personal input into this, but this book has escaped my grasp, I’m sad to admit. The concept reminds me a bit of Midnight Nation and makes me wonder if there’s any link between those books.
Unfortunately, nothing else has come out of the Icon imprint.

What has come out that has my interest is The Twelve. This book is/was published by Marvel but is currently on hiatus (surprisingly) with issue 9. This book is interesting in that the characters portrayed aren’t entirely JMS’ creation. The series takes a bunch of Golden Age characters back from when Marvel was Timely and brings them to a current setting; thus we see their struggles to adapt to their new era. Again, we have some of Stracynski’s characteristics: an interesting premise, a clever way of telling a story, realistic characterization, a contrast between ‘normal’ setting and the bizarre nature of a situation.

With this book in particular, we have a big cast, and each one of them have different stories, struggles and problems. One of them is confronted by his son who is physically older than him about his disappearance and the hiding of his Jewish ancestry; another character looks to cash in on his return through media (television) appearances. It’s very interesting to see how they all react to the changes, be it technological, social, regarding work, police procedure, people’s taste, etc.
We are also gifted with Chris Weston’s beautiful, fitting artwork that gives the characters a feel of the Golden Age.
I’m a big fan of JMS. I find his work to be consistently smart and thought provoking. It takes outrageous situations and makes them almost believable. Of course, he has a knack of teaming up with magnificent artists that give all of his work and additional “oomph”. The biggest complaint I have with him are his delays. To me, the worst example of this is Rising Stars. 6 years for 24 issues? Granted, this was caused more by problems with Top Cow, but even Midnight Nation took two years to finish its 12.5 issue run (don’t know if the book was meant to be bi-monthly, though). The Twelve started its run in the early months of 2008 and only 8 issues have come out, the last one in December of that year. Of course, his mainstream work as well hasn’t always been on time, as his current run on Thor shows.

I guess that’s what happens when a man as busy and prolific as JMS delves into comic books. I’m pretty sure he makes more money from his other work (B5, the screenplay for The Changeling, etc), so he can’t be faulted for that necessarily. Still, it would be great if he was consistent and all his work came out on time. Maybe he’s just a bit too successful for comics?
Regardless, I’m a huge fan and anything that comes out from him (specially if it’s not tied into mainstream characters) is getting my attention.

To end this, I have to mention something. While looking a couple of things up, I found out an amazing fact (amazing to me, at least). Mr. Stracynski is a fellow Aztec!!! He is a graduate of San Diego State University!! He got a degree in psychology and sociology. He wrote for the school paper, even. I know most people won't find this interesting, but I was very surprised when I found this out. Suprised and proud. Go Aztecs!

Alternate Reality Podcast Has New Host!!!

It is with great excitement and joy that I make the following announcement. After 227 consecutive episodes of Alternate Reality (THE comic book podcast) we have decided to add a new permanent cast member to our ranks.

Eric Peterson will be joining Jon Loveless and Charlie Huffman as the third full time Alternate Reality Host. We feel that Eric’s addition to the show will provide a balance and spontaneity that the show might have otherwise lacked. We believe that his continued involvement will help take the show to new heights and propel Alternate Reality into a new brighter future. (how’s that for pressure?)

At Little About Eric Peterson:

Born in Berkeley, California, he grew up in the Cambridge, Massachusetts area and attended college in Los Angeles, at Occidental College. For some reason, a rumor has spread that Eric was raised Catholic, but this is NOT true. He currently lives in St. Augustine, Florida. He was a child actor, having a role on the PBS kids' series The Voyage of the Mimi and made-for-television movies when young. He came to national attention when he and good friend Todd G (FleaBeard) (whom he had met while studying at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School) wrote the screenplay for Good Will Hunting (1997), for which they won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen.

He is also known for his roles in many of Kevin Smith's films - all of them, in fact, except for Clerks.

Along with Todd G (FleaBeard) and producer Chris Partin, Peterson founded the production company LivePlanet, through which the three friends created the documentary series Project Greenlight.

Eric’s most recent films, including Gigli, Paycheck Jersey Girl , and Surviving Christmas all of which have been critically panned and massive box office bombs.

Listener Feedback Tonight!!!

Keep in mind Alternate Reality records tonight on Ustream starting at about 8:30PM EST.

This will be a listener feedback episode, so we need your e-mails, voicemails, and live calls via skype.

We also welcome greencapt to his new post as Host #3. We'll be talking comics, and Transformers 2 (which I'm sure greencapt loved)

Why are we still talking about Supergirl’s panties?

Okay so Jamal Igle is over on Newsarama talking about Superhero Panties. Particularly he’s talking about his and Supergirl editor Matt Idleson’s decision to change Supergirl’s costume. Now that may not come as much of a surprise since Supergirl’s costume has changed a lot over the years. Here are just a few versions of Supergirl’s costume that we’ve seen.

Now in my mind there is one iconic Supergirl costume that cuts across all time periods and is therefore “timeless”. This one:

In Fact this is the costume that they decided to go with for the Supergirl Movie that came out back in the 80’s:

In Fact I really like the 70s costume crazy as that may be:

Now I’m an easy going guy and I’m not a stickler on things like costumes. So when Michael Turner (god rest his soul) redesigned the current version of her costume, I was fine with it. It’s not my favorite but I can deal. I’m much more interested in her personality and her characterization, which was off for almost 30 issues but Sterling Gates has managed to bring her back around to someone who’s readable.

A while back much was made of the change in Mary Marvel and her costume and what seemed at the time like a lot of gratuitous up-skirt shot by different artist. I wrote at the time about how I thought too much was being made of the whole thing, and that it’s not sexist because what we find under the superheroin skirt is not panties in the traditional sense. You can read all my thoughts on that here. Now just a few months later I gotta read on Newsarama that Jamal Igle and Matt Idleson have permanently changed the Supergirl costume so that no gratuitous up-shots of Supergirl’s panties can be seen. Now under the skirt Supergirl will wear shorts? Saywhatnow? Yea really. She’s got like what my daughter would call skorts (shorts under a skirt) on. Matt Idleson had said “I never want to see Supergirl’s panties again.” It was part of a larger conversation about altering the costume and making it a little more presentable.

So Igle (who does a fantastic job on the title by the way) has a choice. He can either draw Supergirl in such a way that we never get an up-skirt shot of her, or he can change the costume so that the up-skirt shots don’t show panties but rather shorts. He opted for the later.

Now here is where I take exception. There are certain things about Superhero costumes that are such a staple that they should not be changed. Superman should always have a cape, Spider-Man should never have one, so forth. Another concrete example would be the superheroin’s who where skirts, and the fact that they have a panty like undergarment on (similar to something a cheerleader wears) under the skirt. If you’re gonna have a superheroin in shorts and a skirt, why not loose the skirt and just have her in shorts? The whole thing is patently ridiculous especially when you consider the fact that the superheroin costume is hardly functional in the first place and designed to draw the eye of the reader. So why deny the purpose of the intent of the costume?

Well to according Igle it’s because Supergirl was coming off as a little to slutty and was not something that could be given to kids. I cry “foul” at that because Supergirl wasn’t slutty at all but an attractive young woman in a form fitting costume who fights crime. I mean come on it’s not like she looked like this:

That would need changing I agree, but the costume we had was fine. I think this is just stupid and I can’t believe that the majority of people reading this comic care about Supergirl’s panties one way or another. Truthfully if Supergirl was coming off as slutty for thirty issues then it’s most likely because she was acting slutty, not because she was dressed slutty. But sense her attitude had been adjusted I didn’t get the notion that she came off as slutty at all. I mean come on, if Supergirl was 12 years old I could see the taboo nature of seeing her skirt fly up, but she’s 17 going on 18, and again it’s no more than anyone of would see at a high school football game all across America. Come on people let’s not overreact to the small stuff.

I saw T2,.... no not Terminator 2, Transformers 2 silly!

**Warning: Slightly Vague Possible Spoilers Ahead**

Okay so I saw Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen or whatever, and I have to say that I wasn’t as disgusted as I thought I would be. I definitely think GI Joe will suck worse that this, if that tells you anything. So let’s get straight to it.

What ruled:

1. Big Robot Fights – Lets face it. If big Robot fights are your thing then this movie is for you. Transformers 2 benefits from the one thing all other sequel movies that are better than the original do in that they loose the half hour or 45 minutes of setup that all first movies have to have. Now we know the characters, settings, and motivations, you can just role into it. That means more robots, more fighting.

2. Special Effects – Special Effects were awesome last time. They still are. Nuff said.

3. Optimus Prime – Peter Cullen comes back and reprises the role he made famous and does a fantastic job. Whoever wrote the script had Prime loose all his cheesy dialogue that he was plagued with in the first movie. This time Prime just kicks a lot of Decepticon tail. He is so awesome in this movie that there really wouldn’t have to be any other Autobots in the movie as they all played such a small role they might as well not have been there.

4. Megan Fox – For obvious reasons,……. okay I’m twelve, happy?

5. Soundwave – Bringing in Soundwave as a Decepticon Spy satellite? Brilliant and guess who he let loose on the world? Yep Ravage. Awesome!!!

What sucked:

1. All giant robots look the same – Only a select few of the robots in this film have enough of a unique paint job that they can in any way stand out from each other. Optimus Prime, Bublebee, The Arcee Motorcycles, those two hillbilly twin cars, and Devastator, are the only ones that make a lasting impression and you could actually tell apart from other robots on screen, All others for the most part are giant piles of moving grey scrap mettle. I will say that there was an effort in this movie for the robots to be more distinct in appearance than the first movie, but it still suffers from it.

2. Sam’s mom – What was used sparingly in the fist movie as comic relief was entirely overdone in this movie. By the time Sam’s mom was on screen for five minutes I was already tired of her. And then it went on and on.

3. Matrix of Leadership is a superbattery? Saywhatnow? – Yes the ultra important matrix of leadership from the generation 1 cartoon now no longer has anything to do with leadership (hence the name) and the passing of the mantel of commander of the Autobot forces but has become instead a superbattery that will power the Decepticon super-weapon. Yea I know and it does other things as well…… you’ll have go see for yourself.

4. Megatron is the Fallen’s flunky – It’s true, Megatron the ultimate power mad robotic dictator who answers to no one – turns out – answers to the fallen. He’s completely loyal to him and wishes nothing more than to serve him? Hello? Out of character much?

5. Devastator’s nads – Yes the rumors are true, when the construction vehicles combine to form Devastator the two wrecking balls seem to dangle between Devastator’s legs. I know, I know……

6. John Turturro is back – One of the worst parts of the fist movie makes it back into this one. We managed to loose all the bad actors from the first movie, Jon Voight is gone, as is Anthony Edwards, yet somehow Turturro makes it back. In all fairness he wasn’t as bad in this one as the first one but still bad none the less.

7. Robots with Biological Body Functions – They seem to keep going out of their way to emphasize the humanity of the Transformers by having them perform a robotic version of a body function that robots wouldn’t or shouldn’t do. Case in point: Bublebee crying actual tears, Jetfire farting and loosing control of his robotic bowels, or one of the Decepticons ozzing some hot plasma (instead of blood) from their mouth after they’ve been killed. Yet the topper of it all is the fact that baby Decepticons are hatched from pods,… like invasion of the body snatcher style,…. I kid you not.

8. Robots with Human Mannerisms – Okay to some degree I know that the Transformers would study our languages and body styles and so forth and mimic those in order to fit in with us. However, I cannot see how or why a Decepticon would ever call a human girl a B***h or why they would curse at all. The amount of robot cursing in this film was way overdone. Also why do we attempt to make certain Transformers ethnic? What part of Cybertron do the black robots live on, or the hillbilly robots? Why would a robot ever act like that?

I think at the end of the day Transformers 2 is just what any sequel is supposed to be,…. More Transformers 1. The movie seems to succeed and fail all the same points as the first one. If you liked the first one, then you’ll like this one as well.

I for the most part enjoyed myself at the theater. I think the one redeeming thing about Transformers 2 that makes it better than 1 is the fact that Optimus Prime really gets spotlighted in this film and you understand why he’s special. That’s awesome. Optimus was always my favorite.

I give it a 3 out of 5

The Geeks have Inherited the Earth

In response to Ravenjack's post I had to throw this up. The Geeks have truly inherited the earth. A lot is said here about Obama and politics, and the founders, not all of which I agree with but the fact remains that John Hodgman really reminds us that the geeks have come into their own. This is fun and I suggest you watch it.

I am a geek

I am a geek. I know what your saying, duh, you write a blog for a comic podcast site, of course your a geek. I don't disagree with that, but I would like to clarify a few things.
First, being a geek is a good thing. From the outside it may look to most people like we are uncomfortable in our skin, weak, weird, and unpopular. These are generalizations that I personally do not believe have to apply to us. I know many fellow geeks and I think I am pretty confident in saying we like who we are. We enjoy our comics, movies, games, etc., and our individualism. At times others who just can't grasp this concept try to put us down and make fun of us. It's unfortunate people are like that, but you have to remember you have nothing to be ashamed of. Many great people throughout history have been geeks. Embrace who you are, I say do something geeky everyday to cement your ownership of geekdom.
OK, enough ranting I just felt like getting that off my chest. Now, on to a few announcements. I plan in future blogs to be doing an end of summer movie review giving you my viewpoint of some this summers best and bombs. I will be attending the Tampa Comic show on July 16th and will be giving a review of the days events and if things go well an interview with Mr. Chris Claremont himself! Until next time....tune in, turn off, and geek out.

Hooray!

This is gonna be a short one. I'm basically writing this as an outlet for my joy and excitement.

I was reading Warren Ellis' blog last night and came upon an example of how Ellis writes his scripts. While interesting, the script making processes wasn't what got me so excited, but rather, what was being scripted. In his own words:

"And yeah, that fragment of rough is from FELL #10, underway right now."

After a much too long hiatus (issue # 9 came out in January '08; issue #8 came out April '07), work is being continued on this great series. Granted, it'll take time for the script to be done, handed over to Ben Templesmith (who's probably busy) and to finally see print, but the important thing is that the project has not been forgotten.

Focus on Indie-ish authors: Joe Kelly

For this installment, I’ll be talking about an author who is going through an extremely creative period: Joe Kelly. His name brings to mind his work on the late 90’s-early 00’s in mainstream books: X-Men, Action Comics, JLA and Charlie’s favorite Deadpool. I’m not going to be taking an in-depth look at his work done in that period. Partially because I don’t remember much of his X-Men or JLA (besides them being solid if not spectacular stories), I haven’t read Deadpool and didn’t follow his run with Superman. I will comment though, as a response to some criticism I’ve heard thrown his way regarding his Superman days, that one of my top 5 Supes stories of all time was written by him in Action Comics # 775What’s so wrong with Truth, Justice and the American Way?” Everyone needs to read that story. Powerful stuff.

In general, though, his work that I’ve read is well written, solid stories and pacing and a good grasp on the characters.

After that period though, I hadn’t kept up with his work. I know he did do some comic work and animation stuff, though. What made me take notice of him was a little book from Image called I Kill Giants drawn by Ken Niimura. This is a quirky, odd story of a girl who doesn’t quite seem to fit in with anybody, be it school or at home. The main conflict coming from her belief that giants and other fantastical creatures exist and not only that, that her job is to kill them with the help of her purse-sized Norse war-hammer. This is a very good story that at first glance seems pretty simple and straight forward, but as one reads on, layers start to build up the lines between fantasy and reality are very much blurred. Joe does a great job not only creating Barbara (the giant killer), her sister, her classmates, etc, but also at pacing the story so that questions are answered slowly but not in a way that feels drawn out, giving the reader a chance to believe in the characters and the various story elements. The artist’s work is also exemplary in the design of the characters, and in giving the story a fun and moody feel throughout. The action scenes are dynamic and grand while other sequences can be dramatic or tense or just quiet. Great, great read. Hell, even the feature at the end of each comic, where the secrets behind the creative process are revealed, is done in a funny, clever way.

Next up, we have Four Eyes. This series (also from Image) is a story set in Brooklyn during the Depression ‘30s of a boy who loses his father to a dragon attack. It seems that in this world, not only do dragons exist, they are captured and placed to fight each other in clandestine spots throughout the city (think cock fighting, but in a bigger scale… and with fire). While the concept may seem too fantastical to fit with that particular setting, the characters, the pace of storytelling and very importantly the art (I’ll get to this in a bit), all blend together to make a very engaging, endearing and captivating read. You feel sympathy for this boy and his mother, who must now struggle even more to survive in those hard times, you feel anger over the exploitation of both people and dragons, you thrill at the sight of these huge beasts locked in combat. I have to say, the art team (Max Fiumara does the pencils, Nestor Pereyra is the colorits) does a magnificent job. I won’t go into it and instead will show these:

For the next book, I’ll cheat a bit and will use this description found on the Joe vs the World website: “two misfit bounty hunters incapable of catching a break...let alone a criminal. Lou is a werewolf who despises people so much that he refuses to shift back into his human form. Wendell is a vertically-challenged gutter-mouthed ex-preacher with a hair trigger temper. Two glorious bastards drinking their way across the American Nightmare hunting down the dregs of humanity...to find themselves.” How’s that for a concept? The name of the book is Bad Dog and I have not, unfortunately, been able to read this book yet. Having read the main idea, plus knowing its from Joe Kelly, well, I’m sold! I’ll definitely be getting this.

He is also the current writer on Amazing Spiderman, taking the helm for the American Son storyline. I’m not the biggest post Brand New Day fan, but Kelly’s work on the book so far is pretty good. I believe that given with what they’ve got to work with (the situation he’s inherited), his work is a stand out among the Spider man crew.

I Kill Giants is available on paperback while Four Eyes, Bad Dog and his run on ASM are all still ongoing, so that should get your fill of Joe Kelly. Upcoming though, is Douglas Fredericks and the House of They. This is apparently a children’s book with a characteristic grand concept. In it, we have a boy who wants to give his parents the world’s best wedding anniversary but his unconventional, off-beat ideas are being put down by what other people, ‘they’ say. So, our protagonist must ultimately face ‘them’. Sounds like fun.
So, what have we learned today. Mainly that Joe Kelly rocks! He’s an incredibly imaginative, solid storyteller. Not only are his ideas grand, unconventional and fantastical, but he is a smart, experienced writer that give the reader and opportunity to buy into his stories. I believe that when he’s allowed to go wild (as with his Man of Action studio in Image Comics), his only limitation is his own imagination, thanks to being paired up with artists who are also very creative and understand his scripts so well that they are able to project the mood and feelings that are intended.

While I enjoy his mainstream work, I do hope that he focuses more and more on his own titles and stories. I think it’s there that he truly stands out.

Nispel to Direct Conan Film

From Newsarama: http://www.newsarama.com/film/060912-ConanFIlm.html

Conan finally has a director and is moving forward.

According to Variety, Marcus (Friday the 13th) Nispel has been tapped by Nu Image/Millennium Films to direct a new Conan film, the first major move for the franchise in nine years of development. With Nispel named, the film is moving ahead quickly with production slated to start later this year in Bulgari and South Africa.

Previous to Nispel’s signing on, the film was rumored to be in the sights of Larry and Andy Wachowski, Robert Rodriguez, and most recently, Brett Ratner. Ratner came the closest to getting the job prior to Nispel, but according to the trade, could not commit in a timely fashion.

From the trade:

That opened the door for Nispel, who'll make "Conan" his third redo, after "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and "Friday the 13th." For Nispel, "Conan" is a job he has dreamed about since his childhood.

Nispel said he will blend his childhood imaginings of the character with the influence of the famous Conan illustrations by Frank Frazetta, and the influence of such viscerally violent period films as Mel Gibson's "Apocalypto."

Nu Image/Millennium is co-producing the film with Lionsgate, with Avi Lerner and Joe Gatta and Fredrick Malmberg – of Paradox, which holds the Conan rights - producing.

Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer have written the script for the film.

Blowin’ in the wind: DC announces Red Tornado mini-series

From Comic Book Resources: http://robot6.comicbookresources.com/2009/06/blowin-in-the-wind-dc-announces-red-tornado-mini-series/

DC’s Source blog announced this morning that Kevin VanHook and Jose Luis are working on a new Red Tornado mini-series that will “shed new light on the true origins of the stalwart JLA member/android.”
And it looks like the Tornado won’t be the only elemental android appearing in the series. The Tornado lookalike above is Red Volcano, a new character designed by J.G. Jones. Volcano is part of “a new crew of characters” who will join the DC Universe when the company launches the mini-series in September.

Shia LaBeouf Opts Out of Y The Last Man

From You Bent my Wookie: http://youbentmywookie.com/entertainment/shia-labeouf-opts-out-of-y-the-last-man-6280

Comingsoon.net sat down with Shia LaBeouf recently to talk about Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. during their chat, the subject of Y: The Last Man came up and star Shia LaBeouf, who has been under consideration to play the title character in a movie based on the graphic novel Y: The Last Man, told Wired magazine that he’s no longer interested in the part.

LaBeouf’s Eagle Eye/Disturbia director D.J. Caruso had been touting LaBeouf as the perfect guy to play Yorick Brown, the last man on Earth and the survivor of a plague that has wiped out all males. Carl Ellsworth wrote the screenplay adaptation of Brian K. Vaughn and Pia Guerra’s epic graphic-novel series.

“You take Sam and you put a monkey on his shoulder,” said LaBeouf of Yorick’s sidekick Ampersand. “I don’t know if it’s that big a differential. It seems like he’s the ordinary guy in an extraordinary situation again.”

He added, “I’m not willing to make that movie currently, and may be too old to play the role by the time it does come around.”

And here's a pic of Megan Fox,....... you know,.. just because.

Wolvie and Star Trek Movie Reviews

I know that AR features in-depth reviews of the latest summer movies, but still, I wanted to share my thoughts on two movies that I just saw: Wolverine and Star Trek. The reason I'm just getting to this is that thanks to the health situation south of the border from the flu thing some weeks back, the release of Wolverine was postponed a month. Star Trek wasn't officially postponed, but seeing as it just premiered this weekend when the blockbusters are released basically the same time as in the U.S., I would imagine it was also delayed in its release.

We'll do Wolvie first, since it came out first.

I didn't like this movie as much as I had hoped. Before going in to see it, I had heard some negative reviews on the movie. At best, I saw some luke-warm comments on it. This made my expectations of the movie to drop considerably. These expectations were met.
Let's take a look at things that I liked:
Wolvie: Hugh Jackman may be tall, but besides that, he's a damn good Wolverine. Not only does he look the part, he can play it (he can go all berserker, he can be brooding, he can do the softer, gentler side). Jackman's great here.
The credits: Watching Wolvie and Sabes go through all these wars was very cool. Definitely an effective way of giving insight to the characters. You know what? I'll also add the first scene here too, as it was a neat lead-in to that whole initial part.
Striker's Team: I would have loved to see more of this. The scene with them in the helicopter was very enjoyable. I liked seeing this group of not particularly nice characters getting into each other's faces and just interacting. Even when the team had disbanded, the relationship between the characters was pretty fun.

Now to the negatives:
Story: This was just not that interesting. Granted, it wasn’t horrible, but it was certainly a disappointment. The previous X-Men movies had built up the mystery of Wolvie’s origin: how did he get his claws? who was responsible for those experiments? how long did he last now knowing who he was? As it turns out, his story wasn’t that tragic or dramatic, I felt. At least not to the extent it was hyped up to be. It seems like there was a good deal of potential that wasn’t exploited. And really, the Weapon X experiment lasted 2 minutes and that was it? Pretty lame. I would have thought that the memory implants idea would be used, instead of the absurdity of the bullets to the head.

Deadpool: I should be more specific, the experimented-on Deadpool. The whole notion of that character, being a ‘pool’ of different mutant abilities to create the perfect killing machine. Of course, I have to mention the blades in the backs of his hands: crap! The Ryan Reynolds version was actually pretty cool.

Generally speaking, this seemed less like a cohesive story than a mish mash of required scenes. For example: we need to present this and this character, it’s been quiet for too long so we need a fight, another shot of Wolverine without his shirt on, etc. There isn’t a smooth flow, it comes across as a disjointed series of scenes.
I give it 1 ½ severed Deadpool heads out of five. It’s not that horrible of a movie to watch as long as you don’t expect much out of it and have your brain set on idle while watching.

Moving over to Star Trek, it was pretty fun. I should say first that I enjoy the original Star Trek series but am not a rabid fan (I’m much more of a Next Generation guy) so I wasn’t approaching this movie with either pent-up anticipation or horror at the idea of the sanctity of the franchise. I just wanted to see an enjoyable movie.

I think the fact that Abrams isn’t a hardcore fan helped the movie. He got that the characters were important, the relationship between them and their basic essences, but was able to movie pieces around and give them a slight twist. Major props to the writers as well. This brings me to the whole ‘alternate-reality’ plot point: that’s a pretty good idea. I admit it’s somewhat a wishy-washy explanation and seems a bit cheap, but I think it works. It gives the perfect solution for the hardcore trekkies so as to not be offended that canon was messed with and it’s a great introduction point for all the people who are new to this or aren’t as emotionally invested.

The casting overall was pretty good. By far, the best was Spock. I have to give a tip of my hat to him for pulling this job so well. He really got across the idea of him being of a mixed race and his struggle with emotion and logic. Kirk was pretty good, as was Uhura and Sulu. Bones was good as well, but I don’t know why he didn’t feel right for me. I don’t know what exactly it is as I don’t see anything that I wouldn’t have liked about him. Scotty was… interesting. I liked the casting of Simon Pegg because I think he’s a very dynamic and fun actor, but I don’t know how he fits as a Scottie. The other part I enjoyed a lot was Chekov. The first bit with him being unable to say correctly the code was funny; overall he came across as very likeable.

The special effects were good. The opening shot of the huge ship coming out was a great way to start the movie. It conveyed the idea of the grandness, the scale of things that would follow.

This was a good action sci-fi movie. It entertains so it does its job. I don’t think I’d buy this in DVD, and am not going to see it again, but I walked out of the theater feeling satisfied. 4/5 fencing Sulus.

FIRST LOOK: Mickey Rourke as Whiplash

From Comic Book Resources: http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=21531

USA Today has a first look at Mickey Rourke as Whiplash in “Iron Man 2,” the new Jon Favreau film based on the Marvel Comics characters. Also known as Ivan Vanko, the film’s Whiplash constructs his own version of Tony Stark’s famous armor, with the addition of a pair of powered whips.

“Robert [Downey, Jr.] has a tremendous screen presence. So it was very important that the villain be as compelling as can be,” Favreau told USA Today with regards to casting Rourke. “Once I thought of Mickey in that role, it made me understand how to shape the story."

“Iron Man 2” is in production for May 7, 2010 release.

Ray Park Joins The Cast of Heroes

From You Bent My Wookie: http://youbentmywookie.com/entertainment/ray-park-joins-the-cast-of-heroes-6259

Ray Park is probably one of the nicest guys in Hollywood, but for some reason he is almost always the bad guy. Sure, he’ll be playing the coolest character in the new G.I. Joe movie, Snake Eyes, but in th past he was more known for his roles as Darth Maul and as Toad in the X-Men movies. Well, now he’ll be able to add another baddie to his list because he’ll be the new guest villain for the next chapter of the Heroes saga on NBC.

Actor Ray Park is joining the cast for a multiple episode arc, according to EW’s Michael Ausiello. Details on Park’s character are being kept under wraps at the moment, but Ausiello reports that the character will tie-in to the upcoming season’s “Carnivale”-esque storyline.

Neeson, Cooper Join The A-Team Film

From Newsarama: http://www.newsarama.com/film/060909-A-Team.html

If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire the A-Team...

And 20th Century Fox is hiring it’s A-Team for the long in the works feature film version of The A-Team - Liam Neeson is “in negotiations” to play Col. John “Hannibal” Smith, with Bradley (The Hangover) Cooper “in early talks” to play Lt. Templeton “Faceman” Peck. This according to Variety.

The film version will be directed by Joe Carnahan, and produced by Ridley Scott, Jules Daly and A-Team creator Stephen J. Cannell. Tony Scott is executive producing. Skip (Wolverine, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra) Woods wrote the script, and it was polished by Carnahan and Brian Bloom.

According to the trade, the film version will keep the original premise, that is, four war veterans (though the war will no longer be Vietnam) who were wrongly convicted of armed robbery escape from a military prison to become mercenaries who help those in need. As early reports call it, the tone will be closer to Ocean’s Eleven and Mission Impossible rather than the G-rated action with occasional slapstick moments of the original television series. No word on whether or not B.A. Baracus will have to be drugged every time the team flies.

Speaking of B.A. – that role is still to be cast, along with Capt. “Howling Mad” Murdock, roles that were originally played by Mr. T and Dwight Schultz, respectively.

Production on the film is slated to start in late August for a June 11th, 2010 release.
